Having an issue where chats aren’t loading in Teams? This problem has been reported by several users, and it has a range of root causes. In some cases, it’s just a minor bug with the Teams app that goes away when restarting, but in other cases, it’s a deeper issue that demands a more thorough fix.
Whatever the cause, this guide shows you several solutions to try.
Before You Begin – Verify Your Internet Connection
One of the most common explanations when chats aren’t loading in Teams is that your internet connection is simply not stable or consistent enough. If Teams can’t establish a clear connection with its servers and other users, it’ll have a hard time loading or sending out chat messages.
So, the first thing to do is verify that your internet is working smoothly.
Step 1. Open your internet browser and go to speedtest.net.

Step 2. Press the “Go” button to check your internet download and upload speeds. If the results appear consistent and in line with your usual connection speeds, then your internet is most likely fine. But if the speeds are very low or jumping up and down, you may have some connection issues.

Step 3. If you detect any connection issues, try resetting your router. Turn it off for 30 seconds, then restart it and try connecting again.
Chats Aren’t Loading in Teams
Fix 1. Log Out and Restart the App
With a lot of Windows apps, a quick and easy way to resolve a lot of common problems is to just restart the app. This can work with Teams, too.
Step 1. Click on your profile icon in Teams, then select “Sign out.”

Step 2. You now need to close Teams completely. The best way to do that is via the Task Manager. Press the “Ctrl,” “Alt,” and “Esc” keys simultaneously to open it. Then find “Microsoft Teams” in the “Processes” tab, right-click it, and select “End Task.”

Step 3. Open the Teams app via any shortcut on your desktop or in the Start menu. Then log in with your usual account and see if the problem is resolved.

Fix 2. Clear the Teams Cache
Sometimes, a bit of corruption among the Teams cache files may also cause problems, such as when chats aren’t loading in Teams. Clearing the cache should fix this by removing the corrupt files.
Step 1. Press “Windows” and “R” together to launch the “Run” utility.

Step 2. Copy this command into the box and press “Enter”: %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\

Step 3. The command should open a “Teams” folder in your File Manager. It should have lots of other subfolders inside. Find the ones labeled “Cache,” “databases,” “IndexedDB,” “Local Storage,” “GPUCache,” and “blob_storage” and delete all of their contents, one by one. Then run Teams again.

Fix 3. Update the App and Your System
Some issues with Windows apps like Teams may occur because the app, or the system itself, is out of date. Updating everything and getting the latest bug fixes and improvements might help you when chats aren’t loading in Teams.
Step 1. In Teams, click the three little dots icon in the top-right, and you should see a button marked “Check for updates.” Click that and see if any updates are available to download and install.

Step 2. You should also install the latest version of Windows. To do this, first open the Settings by either using a shortcut or pressing “Windows” and “I” at the same time.

Step 3. Select “Windows Update” and press the “Check for updates” button. If any updates appear, download and install them. Then restart your device and reboot Teams.

Fix 4. Repair or Reinstall Teams
If all else fails, your best option may be to repair the Teams app or reinstall it entirely. A fresh install should resolve any corruption or bugs you’re having with the software itself.
Step 1. Open the Settings menu by pressing “Windows” and “I” together or using another shortcut.

Step 2. Go to “Apps” and then “Installed apps.”

Step 3. Find Teams in the list. You can type it into the search bar to speed up the process.

Step 4. Click the three dots and then go to “Advanced options.”

Step 5. Scroll down and select “Repair.” Follow any on-screen prompts while the system tries to repair the app. Then try restarting it and see if chats are working. If not, proceed to the next step.

Step 6. If that didn’t work, click the “Uninstall” button for Teams, which is just a bit further down the page from the “Repair” function.

Step 7. Follow the on-screen prompts and wait for the uninstall to finish. Then, open the Microsoft Store, find Teams, and reinstall it.
